Writers Q&A EP 310 Heaven & Earth

Writers Q&A EP 310 Heaven & Earth

On board for #outlanderaln!   ⚓️⛴️
Toni Graphia answering questions.

Q. Are the scripts written in sequence? If not, why?
A. Most of the time they are!  But occasionally, scheduling issues necessitate them being written and/or filmed out of sequence.  This season Ep 301/303 were filmed first, then Ep 302/308.

Q. How Did Thompkins know Jamie was on the Artemis if he never boarded it?
A. We posited that he was on board the boat which rowed Captain Leonard over to the Artemis, and he spotted Jamie on deck and recognized him.

Q. And you all are sure you can wrap up Voyager in the 3 remaining episodes?😘
A. Well, we have!  Yes, there was a lot of material to wrangle, but we did our best and hope everyone enjoys it!

Q. The writing & directing has been spectacular this season! Regarding the newbies, do they approach you, or do u go out and find them?
A. Material is submitted by agents and we read literally hundreds of scripts and narrow down our favorites, then bring the writers in for interviews.  We choose who we think is the best fit for Outlander.

Q. OutlanderWriters They’re all incredible, but has there been a performance so far in s3 that’s really moved you? By their delivery...and not just the words on the page?
A. So many different ones!  Too hard to choose.  And stay tuned for more incredible performances coming up in these final episodes!

Q. Is it hard when you have to make up a dialogue storyline as for Jamie in #HeavenAndEarth or is it freeing to get to be creative and imagine what might have been happening??
A. We love both portraying the book stories and also adding our own take and imagining what's happening "in between" book scenes & stories.

Q. What is a "Captain of a 74?" That term has driven me crazy ever since I heard it mentioned by Captain Raines.
A. That means the Porpoise is a British military ship with 74 cannon.

Q. Would Claire have been tempted to use her penicillin, especially with Elias?
A. She did not bring her penicillin to the Porpoise as she would not have enough to treat that many patients and it may not have been effective against that particular illness.

Q. I would have loved to see a certain English lord on the Porpoise in #HeavenAndEarth BUT I trust your choices completely and I’m sure what is coming will be great; congrats on your beautiful job!
A. Thank you for the compliment!  We needed to do justice to this particular story and we always have a master plan for the season.  :).

Q. I listened to your 310 Podcast
So you have "spirited" discussions in the writers room?
Does that include the actors as well? Who is the referee?
Who decides in a stalemate?😂😂
A. Ha ha, yes, very spirited!  The actors are not in the writers room.  But we have a passionate group of scribes and our motto is always "The best idea wins."

Q. So no Outlander themed wine during the podcast?!?
A. Funny you should mention that. Stay tuned! 🍷

Q. Was that actual creme de menthe pouring out of that barrel?
A. What??  And waste good creme de menthe!  Never!

Q. Did Marsali get the idea to convince the captain that if Jamie gave his word he wouldn't rebel when she told Fergus he was just like Jamie when it came to keeping his word?
A. Absolutely.

Q. I read the script & amazingly, the show followed the script fairly closely. Did Ya'll just delete the dialogue that got cut so we wouldna bitch so much?
A. We didn't delete any dialogue on Outlander Community.  All the scripts you see are the original final drafts.  Some scenes don't get filmed, some scenes/dialogue are filmed then cut depending on how long the episode is running, or what works best in the show.

Q. Once again there’s a rabbit reference in an episode. Elias Pounds “rabbits foot” good luck charm he gave Claire. Also interestingly he came down with the typhoid AFTER he gave it up! Assume that was intentional?
A. We loved the rabbit in the premiere and purposefully planted a few bunnies along the way this season. 🐰

Q. How old is @albiearthur in real life? What a baby face 👶🏻 I’ve watched this episode several times and cried every time 😷😢 when Claire says how proud his mother would be😢😢Beautiful.
A. Albie Barber did an amazing job as Elias. We cried too!! 😢

Q. Listened to podcast and spoke of servicing all the main characters in episodes. Will you be able to maintain this in S4 with storylines outside J&C?
A. We are trying our best! So many great characters, so little time!

Q. How does one-eyed guy know A. Malcomb is Jaime Fraser? That was confusing.
A. He knew Jamie as "A. Malcolm" in Edinburgh, but then heard him referred to as Jamie F. on the ship and realized it was the same person and that one of the names must be an alias.

Q. How exactly did they get possession of the cask of creme de menthe and what caused them to break it open like that, wasting all the alcohol?
A. We didn't feel it was important to the story to know those details... just that at some point, the jig is up.

Q. Noticed everyone on the ship Claire is on, is calling her "Mistress Fraser" HOW do they all know her real name? she was going by Mistress Malcolm? Only the half blind dude knew who she really was and the captain after he told him.
A. She only went by Mistress Malcolm in Edinburgh... but after they fled when the print shop burned, both she and Jamie went back to Fraser... since he's a wanted man again -- by the name of A. Malcolm.

Q. When someone died at sea, did they actually pass the needle through the nose when stitching up the cover? That was the hardest part to watch! Kudos to another heart-wrenching episode! Your cliffhangers leave me gasping for air.
A. The nose stitching was some research Luke found and added to the story. It was heartbreaking. 💔

Q. Hey, thanks for taking questions. I enjoyed the acting very much. Why did Claire need to jump ship if she was already headed to Jamaica? Was she trying to beat the ship there somehow? I can't recall from the books.
A. Yes, she had to get to Jamie before Capt. Leonard did and warn him, as Jamie isn't aware that Leonard is planning to arrest him.

Q. Is the snake real? 🐍
A. Aye. That's an actual cold-blooded reptile with Claire. Tune in next week!

Q. Episode 10! Only 3 more! Was it very difficult making the script for 3 eps knowing that theres still so much more to show? How did u compress it all?
A. Very carefully!!

Q. Are the title cards changing moving forward? They looked and sounded different the last two episodes.
A. We just like to mix them up once in a while. :).

Q. Can you tease what were some of the omitted scenes? Shame this show is not 2 hours long 😉
A. Check out the script for "Heaven and Earth" here: http://www.outlandercommunity.com/insideoutlander/310/

Q. What makes a good fit for Outlander? Assuming sense of humour is very helpful.
A. A great sense of humor is paramount. We get very silly sometimes. But we can also be very dramatic! ;)

Thank you so much. We truly appreciate all of you. And Happy Thanksgiving!
